Weapons Offences

Charges involving firearms, knives and other forms of weapons are serious offences. Recent changes to the Criminal Code have increased the mandatory minimum penalties that exist for many weapons offences. A conviction for a weapons offence can result in a significant sentence of incarceration.

Some forms of weapons are always unlawful to possess. Other weapons may or may not be unlawful to possess depending on how they are possessed and how they are used. For example, it is unlawful to possess a weapon for a purpose that is dangerous to the public.

Any object can be deemed a weapon if it is used as a weapon (for example, although a car, snowball or baseball bat may not be a weapon in the ordinary course of its use, these items can become weapons if they are used to injure or attempt to injure another person).
